American Express launches intent intelligence framework to advance common standards for agentic commerce.

PANews October 19 news: American Express recently released the Intent Intelligence framework, proposing a method to capture and authenticate a customer's purchase intent before an AI agent completes a transaction, and to use that intent as a control throughout the entire transaction process. The framework is publicly available through the Amex Agentic Commerce Experiences (ACE) developer kit.

Core mechanisms include: the Create Intent API captures the customer's purchase instructions and constraints (such as merchant, budget cap, etc.), and the customer completes identity authentication and authorization; subsequently, a unique identifier Intent ID and Proof of Intent Token are generated, which are used to obtain a purpose-limited digital payment credential to replace the real card number, and serve as a control in authorization decisions, fraud prevention, and dispute handling. American Express states that it is working with EMVCo and the x402 Foundation to promote common standards for agentic commerce.
