Arbitrum Safety Board Urgently Suspends Stylus New Contract Activation and Adds BoLD Protection

ChainCatcher news, the Arbitrum Safety Committee performed an emergency upgrade on October 2 at 11:30 Eastern Time on Arbitrum One and Nova, suspending all new Stylus contract activations on both chains, and adding a protection mechanism for BoLD single-step proofs in Arbitrum One's disputed system. The Arbitrum Foundation says this is an ongoing proactive security measure designed to protect the security and integrity of the network.

Stylus allows developers to write smart contracts in languages such as Rust, C + +, and remains compatible with the Ethereum virtual machine, whose programs are compiled into the WebAssembly format. This pause is mainly for manual writing of WASM programs that do not use the standard Stylus compiler toolchain and have not been patched by the current version of ArbOS. The Safety Committee raised the activation required Gas to the theoretical upper limit by calling ArbOwner.setWasmActivationGas (2 ^ 64 - 1), making the new activation economically unfeasible. The activated Stylus contract is unaffected and can continue to be executed and renewed, and the deployment and execution of the Solidity contract is unrestricted.

The added BoLD protection allows anyone to pause settlement of Arbitrum One to Ethereum when two conflicting and both accepted answers arise in the same disputed step, and unconfirmed withdrawals may be delayed for the safety committee to deploy fixes. Officials point out that the Stylus-related vulnerabilities discovered so far mainly affect the activity of the chain, such as denial-of-service attacks, and do not endanger user funds.
