Ledger CTO: Only about 30% of BTC faces quantum risk is questionable

PANews reported on September 28 that Ledger CTO Charles Guillemet said that he disagrees with the view that "only about 30% of BTC faces quantum computing risks, and the remaining about 70% is safe due to public key hash protection." Glassnode data shows that currently about 30.2% of BTC have exposed spending public keys on the chain, but Guillemet pointed out that this only reflects the static state of the chain, and unexposed public keys may still exist in xpub, devices, PSBT, logs or backups; and once a BTC transaction is initiated, the public key will be disclosed before the transaction is confirmed.

Citing Google Quantum AI research, Guillemet said that under a high-speed quantum computer model that does not yet exist, attacks related to secp256k1 can be completed in about 9 minutes. Therefore, hiding public keys alone cannot solve quantum risks, and Bitcoin will eventually need to migrate to post-quantum cryptography.
